Stephen Anthony Herndon

Managing Partner - License 2824, Certified Crematory Operator 1388

Stephen Anthony Herndon is the proud son of Donald Allison Herndon and Linda Crosby Herndon. From an early age, he looked up to his father and grandfather and dreamed of following in their footsteps as a Funeral Director. That dream became reality when he was finally old enough to join the family business, carrying on what is now three generations of service to the Walterboro community. Today, Anthony serves as the Managing Partner of Brice Herndon Funeral Chapels and Crematory and is proud to be a licensed funeral director, embalmer, and certified crematory operator.

Anthony attended both John C. Calhoun Preparatory Academy and Colleton County Public Schools before graduating from Walterboro High School. He went on to Ogeechee College in Statesboro, Georgia, where he earned his Associate’s Degree in Mortuary Science as part of the school’s very first graduating class. While pursuing his education, he gained valuable experience working with Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Homes in Springfield and Pooler, Georgia, just outside of Savannah.

In 2008, seeing a growing need in the community, Anthony re-established Herndon Monument Company in Walterboro, reviving the tradition his father first began in the 1970s. His work has always been guided by a deep sense of care for families and a strong desire to preserve local traditions.

Faith and community play an important role in Anthony’s life. He is an active member of Saint Jude’s Episcopal Church in Walterboro, where he once served on the Vestry. For many years, he was also a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where he sang in the Chancel Choir and served on the Administrative Board. Beyond the church, Anthony has contributed his time to numerous organizations, from the Hospice Care of South Carolina Advisory Board to the Friends of Colleton County Animal Shelter. He has also been deeply involved in conservation and outdoor groups such as Ducks Unlimited, the NRA, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and the South Carolina Waterfowl Association.

In 2017, Anthony and his father launched the Brice Herndon Draft Horse and Carriage Company, offering horse-drawn services to funeral homes throughout the Lowcountry and into Georgia. He also takes great pride in helping manage the daily operations of the Herndon family farm, Perchwood.

For Anthony, family, faith, and service are at the heart of everything he does. Whether through the funeral home, the monument company, the carriage service, or community organizations, he is grateful to continue the legacy of care his family has carried forward for generations.
