Vergie Smoak

Mrs. Vergie Jones Thomas Smoak, 90, of Walterboro, entered into rest Friday evening, August 19, 2016, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.  She was the loving wife of the late Mr. Clayton Lamar Smoak.

Funeral services will be conducted 5:30pm Sunday afternoon, August 21, 2016, First Baptist Church of Walterboro, 124 South Memorial Avenue, Walterboro. The Reverend Philip McNeal officiating.  Interment will follow Doctor’s Creek Baptist Churchyard, 126 Doctor’s Creek Road, Walterboro.  

The family will receive friends prior to the funeral ceremony beginning at 4:30 that afternoon in the church sanctuary. 

Mrs. Smoak was born May 16, 1926 in Colleton County and was a daughter of the late Maddie James Jones and the late Kelsey Hudson Jones.   She was a retired seamstress.   A longtime and faithful member of The First Baptist Church of Walterboro, she was a member of the Miriam Clark Sunday School Class.

Surviving are: three daughters, Shirley Brown of Walterboro, Sandra Walker of Walterboro, and Helen Priester of Ruffin; and one son, Clayton Lamar Smoak, Jr. of Walterboro.  There are twelve grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren that also survive.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kitty Strickland; two sons, Edward Lamar Smoak and William James Smoak; and a grandchild. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to the Mission Fund of First Baptist Church of Walterboro, 124 South Memorial Avenue, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
