Mr. James Dana Gruber, 91, entered into eternal rest Saturday morning, May 23, 2015, at his home on Augusta Highway in Round O while under the care of Hospice of Charleston.

 

Family and friends are invited to attend his memorial service which will be conducted 6 o’clock Memorial Day evening, Monday, May 25, 2015, in The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.  The Reverend James Pedigo officiating.

 

The family will receive friends following the service until 8 o’clock that evening at the funeral home.

 

Born July 31, 1923, a native of Round O, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Dana Boardman Gruber and the late Essie Mae Hughes Gruber.  He served our country faithfully in the United States Army during World War II, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge and helped to liberate The Buchenwald Concentration Camps.  He was known for his strong and dedicated work ethic having been a lifelong carpenter and farmer.  He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter, having been a lifelong member of the Gruber Hunting Club.  He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 93 in Walterboro and was also a member of Faith Crossing Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are: His wife of forty years, Mrs. Ruth Canaday Gruber; three sons, Allen Gruber and his wife Janet of Round O, Robert Gruber of Summerville, and Timothy Gruber and his wife Stephanie of Round O; a daughter, Alice G. Fennell of Walterboro; and five step-children, Mildred Connelly and her husband Robert of St. George, Brenda Mizell of Round O, Linda Infinger of Walterboro, Shirley Jones and her husband Chris of Walterboro, and Cindy Simmons and her husband Butch of Round O.  There are five grandchildren, four great grandchildren; twelve step-grandchldren; and nineteen step-great grandchildren. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Janette Rogers; and dedicated caregivers, Bernice Perry, Madelyn Perry, Jenny Badger, Beatrice Garvin, and Nita Beckett.  He was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Merle Byrd, three brothers, Leroy, Ronald, and Earl Gruber; and a sister, Melissa Watkins.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to: The James D. Gruber Nursing Scholarship Fund at The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie Campus, 807 Hampton Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
