Donald A. Herndon
President
Donald A. Herndon, President and Owner of The Brice W. Herndon & Sons Funeral Home, faithfully served families with compassion and dedication until his passing on July 12, 2019. A proud second-generation leader, Donald carried forward the vision of his father, Brice W. Herndon, ensuring that family values and the needs of the community always came first.
Donald began his career in funeral service during his high school years in the 1960s. A 1970 graduate of Walterboro High School, he was a four-year letterman in football, track, and field. He continued his education at Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Atlanta, graduating in 1972 on the Dean’s List and serving as Sergeant of Arms for his class. Upon returning home, he joined the family business and also operated Herndon Monuments for several years. In 1977, he married Linda Crosby of Walterboro, and together they raised their two children, Allison and Anthony.
As President and Owner, Donald played a key role in expanding the family business. His leadership was instrumental in opening the Ehrhardt-Bamberg Chapel in 2002 and the Varnville-Hampton Chapel in 2006, extending the reach of the funeral home while staying true to its foundation of care and service.
A man of faith and community, Donald was an active member of Doctor’s Creek Baptist Church, serving in many roles including the Deacon Board, Adult Choir, Treasurer’s Assistant, and Cemetery Committee. He was also a member of Bells Lodge No. 236, Ancient Free Masons, and formerly of Unity Masonic Lodge No. 55. In addition, he served on the Colleton County Board of Disabilities, was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Walterboro, and supported organizations such as the National Wild Turkey Federation, among many other civic and community groups.
Donald’s legacy lives on through his family—his wife Linda, his children Allison and Anthony—and through the generations of families he guided with care during life’s most difficult moments.
