William Smyer Obituary

Mr. William Madison Smyer, III, 77, of Edisto Island, entered into eternal rest, Wednesday evening, March 20, 2024, at The Medical University of South Carolina.

Born August 1, 1946, in Chester, he was a son of the late William Madison Smyer, Jr. and Willie Frances Davis Smyer.  He was a retired Quality Assurance Engineer with the South Carolina Department of Transportation.  He was a member of Edisto Island United Methodist Church, where he previously served as Head of the Administrative Board, Head of the Board of Trustees, and served on the Finance Committee.

Mr. Smyer was a member of the Lions Club International for thirteen years and was the 2014 Lions Club Volunteer of the Year.  He was also a beloved member of Epsilon Kappa Phi, a group of friends he has been involved with for the past 60 years.  He was family proclaimed “gourmet chef” whose food was always astounding.  He enjoyed life and was known for his dry sense of humor.  More than anything, his love for his family was unfailing.  He was a loving husband and fabulous father.

Surviving are: his wife of 44 years, Patti Ruff Smyer of Edisto Island; children, William M. Smyer, IV of Charleston, Robert C. Smyer (Brantley) of Daytona Beach, Florida, and Michelle E. Smyer (Patrick) of Adams Run; nephews, Rhett Cathcart (Jamy) of Hendersonville, North Carolina and Eric Cathcart (Jennifer) of San Diego, California; his beloved and spoiled pet, Daisy; and his grand dogs, Oskar, Fred, Rigby, Rodeo, Lazlo, Huxley, Pepperoni, Linda, and Grip.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Cathcart-Pusser.

The family requests that memorials in William's name be made to Epworth Childrens Home, PO Box 50466 • Columbia SC 29250, or online at: www.epworthchildrenshome.org/give; or to Edisto Island United Methodist Church, 8193 Palmetto Road, Edisto Island, South Carolina, 29438.

A memorial service will be held one o’clock, Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Edisto Island United Methodist Church, 8193 Palmetto Road, Edisto Island.
