Virginia Sauls Obituary

Virginia Pauline Sauls, 86, of Walterboro, passed away Tuesday morning, January 23, 2024, surrounded by family.

Born June 7, 1937, in Hampton County, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Robbie Cook and Ashley Pauline Cook.

In her younger days, Virginia enjoyed to hunt and fish. She loved animals, especially hummingbirds, all types of flowers and the beach. She is remembered for her generosity, and for always putting others before herself. After working as a seamstress at the Smoaks Flag Plant, she settled into being a stay at home mother. As a mother she worried about her children constantly and always put them first, and with that she always made sure that they were fed. She is known for making some of the most delicious comfort foods by her family. Over the years, and after the arrival of a couple of grandchildren (her pride and joy), you could not walk into her home without being fed. Besides cooking, Virginia was known to enjoy coffee, raisin bread, butter cookies and her favorite “croissanic rolls”. Her grandchildren were spoiled by her, and her sweets. “Nana” or “Granny” was always sneaking cookies to one of her grandchildren, or great-grandchildren.

Virginia is survived by her sons, Oliver Stanley of Walterboro, Tony Stanley and his wife Deborah of Charleston; her daughters, Brenda Gooding and her husband Franklin of Varnville, Debra Doyle of Walterboro; a brother, Martin Cook and his wife Lorainne of North Augusta; a sister, Anne Terry; her grandchildren, Jamie, Ginger, Chance (Emily), Melissa, Michelle, Shelby, Julie (Chris), Nicole (Will), and Janalee (Brian); her great-grandchildren, Kaydence, Caden, Megan, Autumn, Ivan, Dallas, Charity, Jadien, Marcus, and Abby; a few special friends, Anita Davis, Debbie Ulmer, Nancy Craven, and Mary Pellum.

In addition to her parents, preceding her in death is her first husband, Oliver J. Stanley; her second husband, Perry Sauls; two brothers, Olin B. Cook, and James R. Cook, a son-in-law, Richard Doyle; a brother-in-law, Harold Terry; and her beloved dog, Muffy.

The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice for the care of Virginia, but they would like to especially thank her nurse, Andie, for her loving dedication and support.

Funeral services will be held 12 o’clock, Thursday afternoon, January 25, 2024, at the Brice Herndon Funeral Chapel, Varnville. Interment will follow in Gooding Family Cemetery, where she will be interred beside her husband, Perry.

The family will receive friends during a time of visitation one hour prior to the service beginning at 11 am at THE BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOMES AND CREMATORY, VARNVILLE-HAMPTON CHAPEL, 1074 Yemassee Highway, Varnville, South Carolina, 29944.  Visit the guestbook online at: www.briceherndonfuneralhome.com.
