The Reverend James Mason Day Obituary

The Reverend James Mason Day, known affectionately by many as “Jim”, age 82, entered into eternal rest Tuesday morning, March 19, 2019, at his home in Walterboro.

 

Born December 9, 1936, in Worchester, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late Odlin H. Day and the late Irene Mason Day.   The Reverend Day was a graduate of Coletrade High School and then received his Bachelor Degree at Johnson Bible College, where he graduated Magna Cum Lade.   He served our Country faithfully in the United States Air Force, retiring after twenty years of service as a Technical Sergeant.  During his military career, he served as an Inspector for Environmental Health and served for one year at the end of the Vietnam Era.   The greatest and proudest achievement in Jim’s life was his call to the ministry and possibly his greatest day on Earth was in 1981 when  he was ordained into the Christian Ministry by the Independent Christian Church.  In New York, he was Pastor of McGraw Christian Church.  A longtime resident of Upstate New York, he made the Lowcountry of South Carolina his home in 1994, when accepting the position as Pastor of First Christian Church in Walterboro.  He served at First Christian Church for seventeen years until his retirement in 2012.  In retirement, he again answered the call and accepted the position and at the time of his death was serving as Pastor of Evergreen Christian Church in Walterboro.

 

He was a member of the American Legion – Post 93 in Walterboro where he was Chaplin.  Jim was an avid coin and stamp collector.  He also dabbled a little in art, and was the inspiration for his daughter’s artistic ability. 

 

Surviving are: his wife for forty-eight years, Mrs. June Reynolds Day;  a son, Thomas Odlin Day of Walterboro; two grandchildren, Alexander James Day and Stefany Rebecca Norton; two great grandchildren, Clare Norton and Hailey Norton; and a son-in-law, Kevin Melendez of Inman.  He was preceded in death by a daughter on November 30, 2018, Suzanne Day Melendez; a brother, Lymon Day; and a sister, Maryodlin Trudea. 

 

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to:  Evergreen Christian Church, Post Office Box 1686, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488. 

 

The Relatives and Friends of The Reverend and Mrs. James Mason Day are invited to attend his services which will be conducted 11 o’clock Friday morning, March 22, 2019, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.   Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Bells Highway, Walterboro.   The family has requested that the current and past Elders of Evergreen Christian Church serve as Honorary Escorts and their presence is requested that The Funeral Chapel at 10:30am that morning.
