Mrs. Sylvia Sweatman Garris, 86, of Smoaks, entered into eternal rest Wednesday evening, March 31, 2021 at Jenni-Lynn Assisted Living in West Columbia. She was the wife of the late Reverend Charles Grady Garris, Sr., to whom she was married for 55 years.
Born September 23, 1934 in Orangeburg County, she was a daughter of the late Jerome A. Sweatman, Sr. and Bessie Pearl Myers Sweatman. She was a retired accountant for Boys Farm, Inc. Mrs. Sylvia loved the Lord and supported her husband in his ministry, always doing anything she could to help whenever needed. She was a member of Smoaks Baptist Church, was a former Sunday School Teacher and member of the WMU. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially making trips to The Cove in Asheville, North Carolina and going to the beach. Anyone who knew Mrs. Sylvia loved her and she loved everyone she met. Most of all, she loved her family, spending time with them and watching her grandchildren grow.
Surviving are: her children, Diana Grossman and her husband Jim of West Columbia, Charles “Chuck” Garris of Sebastian, Florida, Gail Crosby of Mount Pleasant, and Nancy Garris of Smoaks; grandchildren, Curtis Fulmer and his wife Muffy, David Garris, Erica Crosby and Hanna Crosby; a great grandchild, Merritt Fulmer; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Steve Crosby; two brothers, Jerome A. Sweatman, Jr. and Quincy Sweatman; and a sister, Barbara Cheslek.
Graveside funeral services will be held 1 o’clock, Tuesday afternoon, April 6, 2021 at Smoaks Baptist Church Cemetery.
