Renferd A. Crosby

Chief Warrant Officer Renferd Adolph Crosby, United States Navy, (Retired), 83, of Ruffin, entered into eternal rest Sunday afternoon, May 16, 2021 at his residence.  

Born July 9, 1937 in Colleton County, he was a son of the late Renferd C. Crosby and the late Miriam Ruth Beach Crosby.  Mr. Crosby served in the United States Navy for thirty years.  During that time, he honorably served abord the USS Midway CV41, a ship that forever remained in his heart. Upon the recommissioning of that ship, he became a plank owner for that Aircraft Carrier.  Today, the USS Midway is on permanent display in a maritime Museum.  His time in service was during the Vietnam Era, he served in Cuba during the “Bay of Pigs”, and served in rescue missions which brought Americans home from Argentina.  Following his time in service, he attended and obtained his degree from Trident Technical College and then was employed as an Electrical Engineer at the Charleston Naval Shipyard.    He was a faithful member of Tabor United Methodist Church in Ruffin.   At his beloved church, he served in many aspects of the church’s work and most notably served as a Trustee and on the Parish Pastor Relations Committee and was a member of the Methodist Men’s Club.    “Bing” as he was affectionately known by many, was a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and had served as Commander for Walterboro Post No. 12102 having led his group to their first ever All State Award.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post 93 in Walterboro and was formerly active in Bells Masonic Lodge, No. 236 – Ancient Free Masons and also the Omar Shrine.   Bing was also an outdoorsman who loved anything to do with enjoying nature and God’s many creations.  He also enjoyed being a part of a special group of veterans who meet weekly for the Veterans Coffee Club. 

Surviving are: his wife of fifty-eight years, Mrs. Helen Beverly Crosby of Ruffin; three children, David Allen Crosby and his wife Kristin of Kingsland, Georgia, Beverly Ann Crosby of Summerville and April Lynn Crosby of Summerville; a sister, Annette Crosby Thomas of Ruffin; three grandchildren, Scott David Swick and his wife Braylee, Brad Alan Swick, and Cody Patrick Crosby; and one great grandchild, Shepard Lee Swick.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Albert Crosby; and a sister, Verda Ruth Nettles.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed in his memory to: Tabor United Methodist Church, care of Gary Herndon, 8857 Bells Highway, Ruffin, South Carolina 29475. 

Funeral services will be held 11 o’clock, Friday morning, May 21, 2021, from Tabor United Methodist Church.  The Reverend Cheri Griffith Yates officiating.   Interment with full military honors will follow in the churchyard.
