Phyllis Joan Coates Cummings, 88, of Walterboro, SC entered into eternal rest on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at her home surrounded by her children. Mrs. Cummings was born in Netawaka, Kansas on March 29, 1933, to the late Melvin Coates and Lennie Wolfe Coates. She was preceded in death by her husband James Allen Cummings, Sr and two sisters, June Schumann of Huntsville, Alabama and Beverly Trundle of Hiawatha, Kansas.
Mrs. Cummings was a housewife and homemaker. She was devoted to her family and spent her entire life being a loving and dedicated and supportive Wife and Mother and Grandmother. She was an active and faithful member of the Evergreen Christian Church in Walterboro, SC for more than 60 years where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Deaconess, Choir Member, Board Member, and substitute pianist. She also loved her church family with all her heart and soul and treasured their friendship and fellowship and loyalty over the years.
Mrs. Cummings spent her free time in the community making meaningful connections, visiting members of her church who were in need, and visiting patients at the local nursing homes. She spent her summers volunteering at Evergreen’s vacation bible school program. Phyllis loved to travel with her husband, and she looked forward to planning their next trip and adventure to some of their favorite places like Hawaii, Alaska and the Caribbean. She was an avid animal lover and spent much of her free time over the years spoiling her dogs who were lucky enough to be in her care. Phyllis had a love for flowers and gardening, tending to her greenhouse where she grew her beloved orchids. She lived life with a flair for style and fashion and elegance and was always excited to dress up for any occasion with an affinity for her stiletto shoes, animal prints and just the right amount of sequins. Phyllis Cummings will always be remembered by all who knew her as a beautiful, classy, sweet, kind, and loving Christian Lady.
Surviving Mrs. Cummings are: Her Son, James Allen Cummings Jr., of Walterboro, SC, Her Daughter, Diana Cummings Bennett and her husband Eddie of Walterboro, SC, Her two (2) Granddaughters Bethany Way Geere and her husband Amadeo of Columbia, SC, and Erin Way Watson and her husband Matthew of Nolensville, TN.
The family of Phyllis Cummings would like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to all of the staff at Amedisys Hospice Care who helped take of Mrs. Cummings during her final days.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Sunday, June 27, 2021 at 3:30 pm at The Brice Herndon Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.
