Mary Carter Williams, 89, of Walterboro, South Carolina, passed from this life Thursday, May 13, 2021, at her residence.
She was born July 3, 1931 in Little Swamp Community between Smoaks and Lodge, a daughter of Jacob E. Carter and Ottie Bunton Carter.
After graduating from Lodge High School in 1949, she married Holland Williams, a navy veteran. They moved to Charleston where she worked at the American Tobacco Company making cigarettes. In 1951, Holland joined the United States Air Force, and they moved to Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC. In early 1953, they moved to Washington, D.C. where they lived for many years. Holland was sent to the Philippines in 1964. They bought a home in Walterboro, and Mary and the three children lived here for some 18 months while he was gone. They moved to Amarillo Air Force Base for 18 months until retiring in 1967.
Mary and her family joined Bethel Methodist Church in Walterboro where she was active in the Lula Strickland Circle, and she took care of the social concerns for 30 years. She had been an active member of the American Legion 93 Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by: her children, Dennis Williams and Ginger Garner. She also has three grandchildren, Scott Beasley (Nikki), Stephen Jeffrey (Cynthia), and a special grandson, Matthew Garner. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Corban Jeffrey, Olivia Jeffrey, Christian Beasley, and Addision Beasley.
She was preceded in death by her siblings: Everett O. Carter, Walter Marion Carter, Jake Carter Jr., Ernestine Ayer Strickland, and Maude Goodwin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 355 Hampton Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, May 16, 2021, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro.
