Letha Mae Smoak

Mrs. Letha Mae Smoak, 88, entered into rest Monday evening, January 22, 2018, at her home in Walterboro while surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hospice Care of South Carolina.  She was the wife of the late Mr. Clyde Smoak.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon, January 27, 2018, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.  Pastor Bruce Fox and Pastor Jonathan Bates officiating.  Interment will follow in Live Oak Cemetery, South Jefferies Boulevard, Walterboro.

Born September 11, 1929, in Walterboro, she was a daughter of the late Eddison Walling and the late Donnie Mae Fisk Walling.   She retired from the South Carolina Forestry Commission where she worked in the Stokes and Green Pond Fire Towers.  Mrs. Letha enjoyed word searches, working in her yards, and her pets. 

Surviving are: her daughters; Wanda Hodges Gwinnett of Statesboro, GA, Audrey Jean Kersey of Walterboro, Frances Kerns (Sam) of Walterboro and Betty Beach (William) of Walterboro; and six grandchildren,  D. J. Beach (Alicia Thornsberry) of Moncks Corner, Melinda Bryant (Matt Schnitzius) of Summerville, Heather Massey (Jay) of Dillon, Lynn Beach Shaw (Stephen) of Brooklet, GA, Michele  Hodges Murray (Rick) of Brooklet, GA and Conway Hodges (Stephaine) of Statesboro, GA; and eleven  great grandchildren, Ryan Beach Reynolds (Jacob), Anna Beach Schaffer (C.J.),  Tori Beach, Will Bryant, Jessie Bryant Estes, Taylor Baldwin, Ridge Dennis, Erika Lee, Brooke Lee, Sierra Hodges Seiber (Garrett) and Chandler Hodges; and four  great-great grandchildren, Sullivan Reynolds, Mary Helen Schaffer, McCarthy Schaffer and Raelynn Seiber.  She was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas Walling, Buster Walling and Joel Walling and sister, Dorothy Boggs.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to: Friends of the Colleton County Animal Shelter, 33 Poor Farm Road, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
