Joe Henry Carter of Lodge, South Carolina, died on July 30, 2020, at Regional Medical Center following a long illness. He was born to the late Blanchard and Alma McMillan Carter on January 1, 1940, and was the first winner of the Colleton County New Year’s Baby of the Year Contest. Joe had three brothers: Blanchard Carter Jr., Willis Carter and Jessie Lee Carter.
Joe lived his entire life at his home place in Lodge and attended Lodge School and Bells High School. He was a member of Carter’s Ford Baptist Church and attended Ashton Baptist Church.
Joe was a survivor. His mother died when he was five months old, and when Joe was sixteen his father’s untimely death forced him to get a job as a painter to support his family. He worked for A & P Construction Company for years and later had a lawn service. Joe was known for his strong work ethic and impeccable character. People have remarked on more than one occasion, “If Joe said it, it’s true.” He was a master painter, and many homes and businesses in the Lowcountry display his handiwork.
Part of Joe’s daily routine – and one of his favorite activities – was dining at Mr. Jessie’s Restaurant in Lodge before his illness.
Joe is survived by his dear friends: the Stanley family, especially Billy and Frances Stanley, and the Varnadoe family, especially Thomas and Rose Varnadoe.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in his memory to Carter’s Ford Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
Funeral services will be held 9 o’clock, Thursday morning, August 6, 2020 at Carter’s Ford Baptist Church Cemetery in Lodge.
