Joan Hiers

Mrs. Joan Kessler Hiers, 84, of Ehrhardt, entered into eternal rest Thursday morning, June 17, 2021 at Colleton Medical Center.

Born November 11, 1936 in the Lowcountry of Berkeley County, she was a daughter of the late Fred Kessler and Essie Estelle Wilson Kessler.  She was a graduate of Orangeburg Nursing School.  Mrs. Joan began her nursing career as a registered nurse at Roper Hospital in Charleston.  She then met Donald at a Citadel parade.  After they married in April 1960, she moved to Ehrhardt and later began nursing at Bamberg Nursing Center, where she retired. 

Mrs. Joan was a longtime, faithful member of Ehrhardt Baptist Church.  She was a devout, Christian woman who enjoyed working in her church and sharing God’s word.  She was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, sister and friend who gave unconditionally to others every day of her life and never complained about anything.  She loved her closest friends dearly and especially enjoyed getting together to play Canasta with them. 

Surviving are: her husband of 61 years, Donald Claude Hiers; children, Rodney Hiers and Michele Hiers; special friends, Judy and Russell Brown who have been so devoted to her and Donald; as well as many other friends and extended family.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Hiers; and her siblings, Constance “Connie” Johnson, Elmo Kessler, L.E. Kessler, Guy E. “Jeep” Kessler, and Kathleen “Kitty” Andrews.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be sent to Ehrhardt Baptist Church, Post Office Box 267, Ehrhardt, South Carolina 29081. 

Funeral services will be held at 3 o’clock, Sunday afternoon, June 20, 2021, at Ehrhardt Baptist Church.  Interment will follow in Ehrhardt Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 pm until the hour of service in the church sanctuary.
