Jackie L. Herndon Obituary

Mr. Jackie LeGrand Herndon, Sr., age 82, of Dowling Avenue in Walterboro, entered into rest Wednesday afternoon, February 3, 2021, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.

 

Born March 11, 1938, at the old home place in Walterboro on the Bells Highway in Walterboro, he was a son of the late LeRoy T. Herndon and the late Corrie Mae Carter Herndon.  A 1957 graduate of Walterboro High School, he served faithfully in the South Carolina National Guard and was a retired rural mail carrier from the United States Postal Service.  Jackie was raised to know a strong work ethic.  He worked hard to provide for a family he dearly loved.  He along with a dear friend, opened the Crosby-Herndon Music Center on Main Street in Walterboro, which became an iconic local to the folks of his community.   Later, he opened and managed Granny’s Café which was also located on Main Street in Walterboro. 

 

Jackie was also raised to know Christ as his Savior and Honor God all the days of his life.  He was a devoted Christian man.  He was raised along with his siblings at Evergreen Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Walterboro and later moved to Northside Christian Church where he was active in most all areas of the church’s work.  At his church, he was an ordained Elder, served as a Trustee, and was the Adult Bible School Teacher. 

 

He was a longtime member of the Gideons International which he served as the President and Chaplain of the Walterboro Camp.   He was also a member of the Walterboro Board of Realty and had also served as that group’s president. 

 

Surviving are: his wife, Mrs. Eugenia Jones Herndon; two sons, Jackie LeGrand Herndon, Jr. and his wife Glenda of Walterboro and Michael Anthony Herndon of Walterboro; three daughters, Sandra Herndon Roberts and her husband Charles, Jennifer “Jenny” Herndon Coste, and Catherine “Cathy” Lynn Herndon; a sister, Shirley Baker of Sumter; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry W. Herndon and Brice W. Herndon; and four sisters, Sue Herndon, Mae Herndon Jones, Rachael Herndon Jones, and Vivian Herndon Wurster.  

 

Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to the following:  Northside Christian Church, 200 Northside Drive, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488; or to, Evengreen Cemetery, care of Evergreen Christian Church, Post Office Box 1686, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488. 

 

The Relatives and Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Jackie L. Herndon, Sr. are invited to attend his funeral services which will be conducted 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon, February 6, 2021, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.  The Reverend Jerry Thompson and The Reverend Jim Stophel officiating.   Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Bells Highway, Walterboro.
