Mr. Harvey Eugene Keefner, age 80, of the Early Branch Community near Grays, South Carolina, entered into rest eternal Tuesday morning, March 23, 2021, at the Hampton Regional Medical Center in Varnville.
Born October, 8, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, he was a son of the late Edwin and Marion Sarpaci Keefner. He served as a Private in the United States Army and dedicated a long and steadfast career to Law Enforcement. He began with the Chicago Police Department, having worked with the Chicago Crime Lab. In 1990, the family made their home in South Carolina, where he worked with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department before transitioning to the Jasper County Sherriff’s Office serving their until his retirement.
He was a devoted member of Saint Anthony Roman Catholic Church in Walterboro and the Knights of Columbus. A Fourth Degree Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus, he was member of the Fr. Brian Martin Council No. 8502. At his church, he served as a lector and was actively involved with the “Helping Hands Food Bank”.
Harvey was a man beloved by many. His word was strong and honorable. While in the Army, he did Martial Arts having been a member of the United States Boxing Team. He was a gun enthusiast and was a member of the Rod and Gun Club on Parris Island. Harvey was also a talented artist, an attribute of his that was not known to many, having created many oil painting as well as pencil sketches.
Surviving are: his wife of sixty-three years, Mrs. Nicoletta Weisner Keefner; two sons, Richard M. Keefner and his wife Susan of Grays and Anthony N. Keefner of Atlanta, Georgia; a sister, Deloris Turner of Chicago; and four brothers, Roger Keefner, Duane Keefner, Richard Keefner, and Kenneth Keefner all of the Chicago area. There are three grandchildren, Joseph Young Keefner, Richard V. Keefner and his wife, Reyna and Maria Lienberger; and four great grandchildren; Katherine, Nicole, Suzanne, and Riley. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Delores M. Lienberger.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be directed in his memory to the following: Saint Anthony Roman Catholic Church, 925 South Jefferies Boulevard, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488; or to, Friends of the Colleton County Animal Shelter, 33 Poor Farm Road, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
The Relatives and Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Eugene Keefner are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at the beginning of Holy Week Monday morning, March 29, 2021, at 10 o’clock from Saint Anthony Roman Catholic Church, 925 South Jefferies Boulevard, Walterboro. Fr. Jacob Joseph, Celebrant. The family will greet friends following the funeral mass on the church lawn. The Final Commendation and Farewell will follow that afternoon at 1 o’clock in Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort.
