Betty Goettee

Mrs. Betty Louise Avant Goettee, 89, of Hampton, entered into eternal rest Saturday morning, September 10, 2022 at her residence.  She was the widow of the late Aubrey Emmett Goettee, Sr., to whom she was married 66 years.    

Born March 5, 1933 in Hampton, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Carter Avant and Mary Ethel Gatch Avant.  She retired from Westinghouse as the Secretary to the Comptroller, where she had worked for over 30 years.  Growing up, she worked at her family’s store, The Soda Shop, on Main Street in Hampton. 

Mrs. Betty was an avid golfer.  A member of the Hampton Country Club, she earned many trophies and was proud of her many hole-in-ones.  She also played on the Lower State Women’s Golf League.  She was a dedicated and faithful member of Hopewell First Baptist Church in Hampton.  She was an extraordinary cook and known for her chocolate delight pie and her recipe was featured in a magazine.  She also loved animals, especially dogs, cats, birds and squirrels.  She always had food for animals in her car and made sure that no animal she saw went hungry.  Most of all, Mrs. Betty loved her family and cherished the time she spent with them.

Surviving are: her children, Donna Goettee Ruth and her husband Jay of Hampton, Aubrey Emmett Goettee, Jr. of Varnville, and Audrey Goettee Hutchins and her husband Robert of West Columbia; her granddaughter, Kristen Michelle Hutchins of Tampa, Florida; one that she loved as a daughter, Becky Avant Covington and her husband Mark of Beaufort; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Avant and Ruby Avant; brother-in-law, Willie Ginn; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her siblings, Haskel Avant, Lamar Avant, Woodrow Avant and his wife Janie, Billy Avant and his wife Ruby, Ralph Avant and his wife Ann, James Avant and his wife Phoebe, and Beatrice Ginn. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to: Hampton County Animal Shelter, Post Office Box 658, Varnville, South Carolina 29944.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, September 13, 2022 at Hopewell First Baptist Church, 6404 Hopewell Road, Hampton.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 1 in the church sanctuary.
