Mr. Woodrow Wilson Bowers, 88, of 3017 Peniel Road, Walterboro, entered into his eternal rest Thursday afternoon, September 15, 2011, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. He was the devoted and loving husband for sixty-three years to Mrs. Dorothy Herndon Bowers until her death in February of 2011.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, September 18, 2011, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. Interment will follow in Great Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Great Swamp Road, Walterboro where Masonic Rites will be conferred by Hudson Masonic Lodge, No. 373.
Born December 10, 1922 in Colleton County, he was a son of the late John Hiers Bowers and the late Leatha Emma Catterton Bowers. He served his country faithfully in the United States Navy beginning in 1943 where he saw action during World War II holding the rank of Boatsmate First Class until his discharge on January 17, 1947. He made a career with the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he was a Ship Fitter working with them faithfully until his retirement. He was a longtime member of Great Swamp Baptist Church where he was active in many aspects of the church's work alongside his wife and others in the church where a need for his service presented itself. Also at his church, being one of the oldest members on their roll, he served for many terms on the Deacon Board as well as having taught one of the Adult Sunday School Classes. He was a master mason holding his sixty year membership with Hudson Masonic Lodge No. 373, Ancient Free Masons, where he was a Past Master of the Lodge.
Surviving are: a daughter, Janice Bowers of Walterboro; a son Donald Lee Bowers of Islandton, and a brother, Julian W. Bowers of Islandton. There are three grandchildren, Joshua M. Bowers, Nicholas E. Crosby, and Brittany L. Martin as well as three great grandchildren, Sharon, Amber, and Coleman who also survive.
The family will be at the residence of his daughter Janice, 3141 Peniel Road, Walterboro.
Flowers will be accepted, or for those who wish, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to the rebuilding of the church his family loved dearly and formed many fond memories, Great Swamp Baptist Church Building Fund, care of any South Carolina Bank and Trust, 600 Robertson Blvd., Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
