WALTERBORO " Mr. Willie James Strickland, 74, of 839 Bachelor Hill Road, Walterboro, died Monday evening, May 5, 2008, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 oclock Thursday afternoon, May 8, 2008, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro with The Reverend Roger Quesenberry officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by the United States Air Force will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro.
Mr. Strickland was born April 15, 1934, in Charleston and was a son of the late Wilbur Olen Strickland and the late Ruth Crosby Strickland. He served his country faithfully for four years in the United States Air Force; two and one half of the years were served in Japan and Korea. While in service he earned the U.S. Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Rokpuce of Korea Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
He retired in 1992 after forty-six years in the construction business. While a licensed Contractor, he built the Hilton Head Hospital and Walterboro Vocational Center. He built condominiums on Hilton Head Island, apartment buildings in Columbia, South Carolina, South Dakota, Charleston, Texas, and Florida. Mr. Strickland will be remembered for the love he possessed for his family and for how much he like to hunt and fish.
Surviving are: his wife of fifty-three years, Mrs. Eugenia Jean Walls Strickland; two daughters, Pam Taylor (Timmy) of Ruffin and Linda Herndon (Johnny) of Islandton; two sons, Willie G. Strickland (Reba) of Walterboro and Ray Strickland (Mollie) of Walterboro; and three sisters, Joanne Thompson of Statesboro, Georgia, Barbara Ann Lyles (Gerald) of Soperton, Georgia, and Betty Sparks (R.L.) of Walterboro. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Natasha DeWitt (Travis), Dusty Strickland, Shane Roberts, Bridgett Carson (Richard), DeAnna Bongiorno (Jason) Gwen Herndon, Mandy Pearce (Lucas), Melinda McClendon, Stephanie Strickland; as well as great grandchildren, Brianna Chapman, Rhaynie Bongiorno, Faith Pearce, Hope Pearce, Jon Ray McClendon, Joshua McClendon, and Tanner DeWitt. He was preceded in death by two brothers, The Reverend Arnold Strickland and Odean Strickland.
Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorials be made to his church home, First Assembly of God Building Fund, 2107 Hampton Street, Walterboro, SC 29488.
