William Stephen

Mr. William Melvin "Bill" Stephen, 83, of Lowcountry Highway, Ehrhardt, entered into eternal rest Saturday, September 24, 2011 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held 11 o'clock Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Ghents Branch Baptist Church in Denmark. Interment will follow in the Ayer Cemetery at River's Bridge State Park. The family will receive friends from 10 am until the hour of service at the church.

Mr. Stephen was born May 8, 1928 in Connersville, Indiana and was a son of the late Samuel and Evelyn Stephen. He served his country faithfully in every branch of the military, retiring from the United States Navy. During his military career, he received many medals and decorations including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with FMF Emblem. He then retired as a Safety Engineer with Flour-Daniel Company. Mr. Stephen was a member of Ghents Branch Baptist Church, and was formerly a member of Fairfax Baptist Church and St. John's Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. He enjoyed fishing when he was able, but most of all, enjoyed life.

Surviving are: his wife, Vita Lee Barnes Stephen of Ehrhardt; son, Bruce Leroy Stephen and his wife Beverly of Hamilton, Ohio; sister, Wilma Gillam of Texas; many nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews; and 8 great - great nieces nephews, Kevin, Madison, Broghan, Rileigh Anne, Ollie and Will Barnes, and two very special great - great nieces, Jayden and Jordan Barnes.
