William "Bill" Smith

Mr. William Howell Smith, 80, of Barnwell, entered into eternal life Monday, June 15, 2015 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 6 o’clock, Thursday evening, June 18, 2015 at Hagood Avenue Baptist Church, 1144 Hagood Avenue, Barnwell.  The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 pm until the hour of service at the church.

Born November 26, 1934 in Bamberg County, he was a son of the late George Howell Smith and Mavis Smoak Smith.  He retired from the Savannah River Site and served his county in the South Carolina Army National Guard. Mr. Smith was a member of Hagood Avenue Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon and served as the church clerk and treasurer for 17 years.  He was a member of Harmony Masonic Lodge #17 in Barnwell.  He loved working in his yard and was a champion weed puller.  Most of all, he loved his family and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are: his wife of 58 years, Delores Bishop Smith of Barnwell; children, Robert Sheldon “Bobby” Smith and his wife Robin of Barnwell and Sonya Smith Brown and her husband Scott of Barnwell; brothers, J. Wayne Smith of Cope and Douglas Smith of Hunters Chapel; grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Bailey Brown and Bethany Brown; one he considered as a grandson, Bailey Navarro of Barnwell; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Glennon Smith; and his sister, Lilly Beth Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to: Hagood Avenue Baptist Church, 1144 Hagood Avenue, Barnwell, South Carolina 29812.
