Biography

Mrs. Violet Gibson Crosby, 82, of Cane Branch Road, Walterboro, entered into rest Tuesday morning, April 29, 2014, at her home while under the care of Amedisys Hospice. She was the loving wife of the late Mr. James Talf Crosby who died in 1999.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon, May 1, 2014, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend Craig Crosby, The Reverend Larry Smith, and The Reverend Michael Coxwell officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro.

Born June 16, 1931, a native and lifelong resident of Colleton County, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd J. Gibson, Sr. and the late Edna Jones Gibson. She retired as a supervisor from the dress manufacturing industry having worked at plants in Smoaks and Walterboro, and along with her husband owned and operated Crosby's Plant Farm in Walterboro. She was a member of Rice Patch Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Islandton. She will be fondly remembered for her constant love and generosity that she afforded to many along with her favorite pastimes in life which were the countless hours she spent tending to her flowers, admiring hummingbirds, and fishing in her pond.

Surviving are: two brothers, L.J. Gibson, Jr. and his wife Vernelle and Bobby Gibson, Sr. and his wife Alice all of Hampton; a sister, Gloria Godley and her husband Lamar of Islandton; two brothers-in-law, Derwood Polk of Islandton and Coy C. Crosby and his wife Eve of North Carolina; and three sisters-in-law, Faye C. Bond of Walterboro, Myrtle Gibson of Varnville, and Dot Gibson of Georgia. There are many beloved nieces and nephews, as well as great and great great nieces and nephews whom she adored as her own children that also survives. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Gibson and Roy N. Gibson; and two sisters, Gladys Crosby Lamb and Rae Gibson Polk.

Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to: Rice Patch Christian Church, care of Mr. Russell Kicklighter, 1515 Rum Gully Road, Islandton, South Carolina 29929.

The family will be at the home of Lamar and Gloria Godley, 2789 Moselle Road, Islandton.
