Veronica Horton

Mrs. Veronica Lydia Tuten Horton slipped away gracefully and peacefully on July 27, 2014 at her husband’s family homeplace in Jasper County, SC. She was several months short of age 95.

A celebration service will be held 4 pm, Friday, August 1, 2014 at Stafford Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 pm until the hour of service Friday at the church. The family will hold a memorial gathering at a later date on St. Simons Island.

She was born November 17, 1919, in Hampton County to Grover Cleveland Tuten and Cleopatra Adelaide Shuman Tuten. One of eight siblings, she graduated from Furman High School in 1936, Mars Hill College in 1938, Mercer University in 1940, and University of South Carolina in 1944. She taught with her husband William Robert Horton in the Glynn County School System for 25 years.

She resided on St. Simons Island, Georgia for 60 years and was an active member of First Baptist Church, St. Simons. She was associated with various organizations and projects over the years, including Delta Kappa Gamma, Peace weavers, Great Decisions, the St Simons African American Heritage Coalition, and the Horton House Residential Care Facility, to name only a few.

She is preceded in death by her husband Robert and her daughter, Judy Horton Owens. She is survived by an older sister, Miriam Paulk, of Tallahassee, FL; a daughter, Kaye Horton of St. Simons; two grandsons, Bobby Owens and Randy Owens of St. Simons; a special niece, Elizabeth Messer of Birmingham, AL; two sisters-in-law, Betty Reid of Grays, SC and Janie Mixon of Varnville, SC. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, grands, and great grands.
