Vernon O'Quinn

Senior Chief Petty Officer Vernon O’Quinn, United States Navy (Ret.), age 88, of Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Sunday morning, March 13, 2016, at the Pruitt Heath Care Center in Walterboro. He was twice married, first to the late Mrs. Lois Hiott O’Quinn and secondly to the late Mrs. Hazel Horne O’Quinn.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 o’clock Thursday morning, March 17, 2016, from Doctor’s Creek Baptist Church, 126 Doctor’s Creek Road, Walterboro. The Reverend Kevin Carter officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Live Oak Cemetery, South Jefferies Boulevard, Walterboro.
Born July 9, 1927, in Colleton County, he was a son of the late John Gary O’Quinn and the late Lillian Fender O’Quinn. He served our country faithfully in the United States Navy during both World War II and the Korean Conflict, retiring with the rank of Senior Chief. He then worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he retired as a Boiler Repair Foreman. He was a member of Doctor’s Creek Baptist Church. Vernon, a quiet and simple man, will always be remembered for the love he had for gardening and farming, known by many for his watermelons and the specialty he had with pickling cucumbers.
Surviving are: two sisters, Doris O’Quinn Crider of Bamberg and Ena O’Quinn Reed of Walterboro; a step-daughter, Jennie Horne Seitz of Beaufort; and five grandchildren, Brittney Biss Smith (Cory) and their daughter, Logan, Jeanie M. Franks, Justin J. Biss (Erikah), Anthony Mullins, and Amy D. Graham and her children, Robert, Jason, Christine, and Rodney. There are three great grandchildren; many loving nieces and nephews; and a dear family friend and caregiver, Blue Drawdy Benton that also survive. He was preceded in death by a great grandson, Jessie; two brothers; and one sister.
Flowers will be accepted, or for those that desire, the family has suggested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to the Annie Armstrong Mission Offering at Doctor’s Creek Baptist Church, Post Office Box 2, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
