Vernelle Craven

Mrs. Vernelle Varnadoe Crosby Craven, age 91, of 1139 Dandridge Road, Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Thursday afternoon, July 2, 2009, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. She was twice married, first to the late Benjamin Hearl Crosby, Sr. and secondly to the late Mr. Lawrence Heyward Craven.



Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 oclock Monday afternoon, July 6, 2009, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro with The Reverend Howard Wright, The Reverend John Harbin and The Reverend Steve Rucker officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro.



Mrs. Craven was born November 10, 1917 in Colleton County, South Carolina and was a daughter of the late Willie Varnadoe and the late Mable Crosby Varnadoe. She was a retired cafeteria technician, having worked at Forest Hills Elementary School in the Colleton County School District. She was a member of Jones Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was formerly active in the Womens Ministry. She loved music, flowers and working in her yard. She will be remembered for her love of her family and for the caring, happy person she was.



Surviving are: one son, Benjamin H. Buster Crosby of Walterboro; two daughters, Betty Crosby Thomas and her husband, William Bill Thomas of Walterboro and Laveria Crosby Nettles and her friend, William Wise of Walterboro; ten grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren. She was the last surviving child in her family and was predeceased by a daughter Millie Jean Avant, a daughter-in-law, Dorothy R. Crosby, one granddaughter and one great grandson.
