Tillman Evans

Walterboro, South Carolina

Mr. Tillman Evans, 89, of Walterboro, entered into rest Friday morning, November 22, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born September 14, 1935, in Colleton County, South Carolina and was a son of the late Tuter and Hallie Valentine Evans.  Tillman served our country faithfully in the United States Navy for twenty years having retired with the rank of Petty Officer First Class Gunners Mate after having served during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  He then worked a long and dedicated career with South Carolina Electric and Gas where he retired after twenty-five years of service as a Control Room Operator at the Canadys Power plant.  He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Walterboro.  He will always be remembered for his love of the outdoors, working diligently in his garden and sharing his harvests with the community.   His grandchildren were his pride and joy.

Surviving are: his wife of fifty-two years, Mrs. Susan Wells Evans; four children, Kevin Evans (Tammy), Brian Evans, Gary Evans (Melissa), and Martie Hooker (Erwin) all of Walterboro; two sisters-in-law, Frankie Jo Evans and Ellen Wells Chambers; four grandchildren, Nicole Burroughs (Jonathan), Shannon Pruitt (Cody) Amanda Call (Dustin), and Abby Evans; and five great grandchildren, Jackson, Norah, Josie, Madelyn, and Ellie; as well as a host of nieces and nephews to include Gloria Cummings and Joyce Baxter.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Armentrout Evans; a daughter, Barbara J. Wixson; six siblings, Minnie Lou Evans, Chesley Evans, Adell Evans, Johnny Evans, Clyde Evans, and Ben Evans.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning, November 26, 2024, from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 7345 Jefferies Highway, Walterboro.   The Reverend David Jackson and The Reverend Danny Zorn officiating.  Interment with military honors will follow in the churchyard.
