Mr. Thurmond Govan Phillips, 75, of Pocotaligo Road, Early Branch, died Monday, August 23, 2010 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 4 pm, Thursday, August 26, 2010 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Baptist Church No.1 Cemetery in Walterboro.
Mr. Phillips was born June 16, 1935 in Wrens, Georgia and was a son of the late Oscar Columbus Phillips and Julia Lee Rowell Phillips. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army and retired from Westinghouse in Hampton. He was a member of Huggin Oak Church of God. He loved fishing and hunting and was an avid gardener who enjoyed tending to his flowers; but most of all, he will be remembered as a man who loved God and his family and whose faith never wavered.
Surviving are: his wife, Mary Cooke Phillips; children, Dawn Sheehan of Nashville, TN, Doyle Phillips (Louie) of Mt. Juliet, TN, Dale Phillips (Eva) of San Diego, CA, Juli Metts (Ronnie) of Varnville, Arthur Sisler (Trina) of Varnville, and Susan Sisler of Terra Alta, WV; brothers and sisters, Lee A. Phillips of Mars Hill, NC, Wilbur R. Phillips (Woodrine) of Albany, GA, and Doris A. Thompson of St. George; sister-in-law, Mary Phillips of St. Helena; 8 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert D. Phillips.
