Mr. Thomas Clare Mercer, 49, of Clydeville Lane, Cottageville, entered into rest Saturday evening, August 31, 2013, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 oclock Wednesday afternoon, September 4, 2013, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. Interment will follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery, 2210 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro.
Born June 19, 1964, a native of Alliance, Ohio and a son of Mrs. Helaine Hamilton Mercer and the late Mr. Thomas L. Mercer; he made the Lowcountry of South Carolina his home for the past 40 years. For the past thirty years, he has been a licensed cosmetologist having worked in Nouveau Sloan in Summerville where he became an extended family member to many of his clients. He was a member of Gospel Tabernacle of the Apostolic Faith in Cottageville where he was active in many aspects of the churchs work. At his church, he was a Sunday School Superintendent and was a Deacon. Tom as he was affectionately known by many, loved his bible and will also be fondly remembered for his love of Bass fishing.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Salem, Ohio are: his loving wife of twenty-six years, Mrs. Sylvia Johnson Mercer; two daughters, Amanda Claire Spencer and her husband Daniel of Cottageville and Chelsea Lynn Walker and her husband Specialist Kareem of Cottageville; a brother, Mark Mercer of Salem, Ohio; and a half-brother, Chad Mercer of Canton, Ohio. There are four grandchildren, Joseph, Skyler, Riley, and Isabella; and his father and mother-in-law, Rochie and Ruby Grooms Johnson of Cottageville that also survive.
Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorial contributions be directed to a fund that was established to assist with Toms medical expenses.
