WALTERBORO – Mr. Thomas Franklin Mangrum, 95, of Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Tuesday afternoon, September 9, 2025, at his residence.
Thomas was born on November 1, 1929, in Bedford County, Tennessee. He was a son of the late Thomas Porter Mangrum and the late Flossie Irene Bell Mangrum. Thomas had a unique gift to make everyone he met feel special because he truly believed they were. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Thomas and his family moved to Charleston, South Carolina in 1967 where they were faithful members of the Essex Village Church of Christ. Thomas retired in 1992 from the Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina where he was a District Manager in the Circulation Department. Following retirement, he worked for a number of years for Jim Walter Homes. After making Walterboro his home in 1998, he became a member of the Walterboro Church of Christ where he was devoted to meeting people’s needs by giving them rides, food, and lots of laughs.
Thomas is survived by his loving and devoted wife of seventy-five years, Mrs. Sarah Arnold Mangrum; five children, Brenda Streets of Charleston, South Carolina, Dianne Loftin (Lenn) of Piedmont, South Carolina, Keith Mangrum (Angie) of Marietta, Georgia, Bonita Ellwein (Dan) of Ridgeland, Mississippi, and Denise McCracken (Tommy) of Charleston, South Carolina, a brother, Hollice Mangrum of Tennessee; twelve grandchildren, Tammy McGarity (Frank), Ginnie Fowler (Scott), Crystal Crisp (Adam), Andy Streets (Natasha), Lindsay Harrison (Joe), Tiffany McDowell (Sam), Laura Mangrum, Ryan McCracken (Beth), Sarah Brock (Rachel), Olivia Walden (Brian), Amy Ellwein, and Isabelle Ramey (Josh); twenty-seven great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Howard Streets; two brothers, Joe Mangrum and Porter Mangrum; and two sisters, June Carroll and Trudy Downs.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed in his memory to: the Walterboro Church of Christ, 1420 Wichman Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, September 16, 2025, at Essex Village Church of Christ, 736 Savage Road, Charleston. Interment with military honors will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road, Charleston.
