Dr. Theresa Ackerman

Dr. Theresa Marlane Ackerman, 62, of Red Oak Road in Cottageville, entered into rest Monday afternoon, April 8, 2013, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 o’clock Thursday morning, April 11, 2013, from Bethlehem Baptist Church, 12898 Round O Road, Round O. The Reverend Dr. Wayne Golden officiating. Interment will follow in the family cemetery, Ackerman Cemetery at Red Oak on Red Oak Road in Cottageville.

Born July 4, 1950, a native of Colleton County, South Carolina, she was the brave daughter of the late Benjamin Fletcher “B.F.” Ackerman and the late Blanche Redman Ackerman. She was a professor of English at the University of Hawaii and was also for many years a handwriting analyst. Having lived for many years in Hawaii and then Atlanta, Georgia she made the place where she was born and raised her home again in 2003. While in both Hawaii and Atlanta she was responsible for the chartering and passing of many laws which were enforced to better the lives of the handicap. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Round O where she was active and dearly loved, and at her church, as well as many other places around the country she lead many prayer groups. Theresa was a computer genious and was also a talented and accomplished writer. To know her was to love her, and her smile and caring nature will always be remembered by the many who called her a friend.

Surviving are: a loving cousin, caregiver, and “adopted sister”, Mrs. Charleen Yarochowicz and her husband Gene of Cottageville; two uncles, Mr. Francis Ackerman and his wife Emily of Pickens and The Reverend John H. Ackerman of Selma, Alabama; and a aunt, Mrs. Mary Preacher and her husband Howard of Cottageville. There are numerous other cousins and a host of loving and caring friends that also survive.

Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to: Ackerman Cemetery at Red Oak, care of Mr. Danny Dandridge, 1875 Red Oak Road, Cottageville, South Carolina 29435.
