The Reverend James A. Beverly, Sr.

The Reverend James Allen Beverly, Sr., age 90, of Walterboro, entered into the presence of Christ whom he has served faithfully and loved with his entire heart this past Saturday morning, August 15, 2026, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.

Born May 1, 1936, in the small town of Wadesboro, North Carolina, he was a son of the late James A. Beverly and the late Beatrice Hendricks Beverly Thompson. James served our country faithfully in the United States Marie Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was raised in Conway, South Carolina where he lived prior to making Johns Island his home for forty years. He and Mrs. Beverly have resided in Walterboro for the last twenty-one years, following his appointment as Pastor of Edisto Pentecostal Holiness Church in Cottageville.

James dedicated his life to the service of others, not only through his devout work as a pastor but also in his honorable service as a Marine. His tenure in the military instilled in him values of discipline, integrity, and honor, qualities that he carried throughout his life and ministry. He also served as a police officer in both Horry County and Folly Beach. Thereafter, he became a long haul trucker. Ordained as a pastor in 1973, James touched countless lives with his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering faith. His sermons, filled with hope and encouragement, resonated with his congregation and beyond, bringing comfort and inspiration to those in need. He was a member of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, having received his fifty-year pin in 2022. He was always avid in his attendance and looked forward to the church’s annual Camp Meeting.

James's legacy is rich with the love of family he leaves behind and the enduring impact he made on all those who were blessed to know him. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and a host of family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory. He will always be remembered for the love he always had in his heart, the jokes and laughter he shared, along with the joy that fishing and traveling brought to his life.

Surviving are: his wife, the light and love of his life for seventy years, Mrs. Nancy Todd Beverly; four children, James A. Beverly, Jr. (Kelly) of Summerville, Arlette Munion (Tim), of Ohio, Paula Beverly of Walterboro, and Lisa Chuck (Doug) of Virginia; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Buster.. He was preceded in death by two children, Wanda Gail McCracken and Marshall Jefferson Beverly.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 o’clock Thursday morning, August 20, 2026, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend Dean Morgan and The Reverend Billy Joe Hill officiating. Interment with military honors will follow on Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock in Bakers Chapel Churchyard in Aynor.
