Syble Benton

Mrs. Syble Wethington Benton, 84, of Pine Grove Road in Ruffin, South Carolina, died February 6, 2022, at Colleton Medical Center.  She was the wife of the late Keith Barrott Benton.

Mrs. Benton was born April 9, 1937, in Bay Harbor, Florida, a daughter of the late John Willoughby Wethington and the late Allie Christine McQuagge Wethington.  She attended schools in Ruffin, SC and Smoaks, SC, having graduated from Ehrhardt High School in Bamberg County (gr. 1957).  Mrs. Benton was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church #1.  She was a former Sunday School teacher at Peniel Baptist Church on Forks Road in Islandton, SC.  She was formerly employed at Westinghouse in Hampton and Teledyne of Walterboro.

Surviving are: her son, Johnny Herndon (Linda) of Islandton; a daughter, Patricia Herndon of Islandton; a daughter-in-law, Sonya Herndon of Hendersonville; a step-son, Terry Benton (Toni) of Evans, Georgia; and a step-daughter, Sandra Crider (Joey) of Knoxville, Tennessee.  She is survived by 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.  She is also survived by a brother, James Wethington (Claudia) of Santa Clara, California; a sister-in-law, Mary Wethington of Lexington; and special friends that she loved as family, Tawana and Dillon Avant, and Stevie Fox, all of Ruffin.  She was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Herndon; and a grandson, Bryan Benton.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold Wethington; and sisters, Shirley Reavis, Allie Rahn, Joan Wethington, and Betty Alderman.

Funeral services will be held 11 o’clock, Thursday morning, February 10, 2022 at Pine Grove Baptist Church #1, 99 Pine Grove Road, Walterboro.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service Thursday beginning at 10 o’clock in the church sanctuary.
