Sybil Jones Hathcock

Mrs. Sybil Jones Hathcock, 78, of Cottageville, entered into rest Sunday evening, June 4, 2023, at her residence surrounded by her family.

Born January 30, 1945, in Savannah, Georgia, Sybil is the daughter of the late James Jones, Jr. and the late Irene Hendrix Jones.  She was married to the love of her life Carrol Hathcock for nearly 60 years.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Sybil worked tirelessly in countless homes and buildings throughout the Lowcountry of South Carolina as a wallpaper installer.  She was well known for her expertise and excellent workmanship.    She was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church in Cottageville, where she typically was found working behind the scenes helping with the church’s annual Vacation Bible School or assisting with the decorations for the Christmas programs.   She was a fabulous seamstress and crafter, creating numerous projects for her family and friends.   Most of all, she loved her family, always centering her life around them.

Sybil is survived by her husband, Carrol; their four children, Brent Hathcock of Atlanta; Carole Lynne O’Brien (Jim) of Woodbridge, Virginia, Stephanie Gruber (Timmy) of Round O, and Wesley Hathcock of Cottageville; two brothers, Edwin Jones and Harry Jones; and a sister, Edith Hathcock.   She is also survived by six grandchildren, Patrick O’Brien (Brianna), Lauren O’Brien, Sean Gruber, Cody Gruber, Jessica Schwind (Trevor) and Joshua Hathcock and five great grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m.  on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.   Reverend Barry Morehead and Reverend David Drumheller will officiate.  A private family interment will be held in the family cemetery.
