Mr. Steven Joseph Maxey, 62, of Ruffin, entered into rest Wednesday morning, March 10, 2021, at his residence while under the care of Agape Care Hospice.
Born October 30, 1958 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, he was the son of the late David Leon Maxey and the late Dorothy Player Maxey Hudson. Steven spent his childhood and youth years helping out with farming responsibilities such as caring for many animals and gardening.
Family life was important to Steven as he held dear the experiences of many gatherings and celebrated family reunions.
Steven had fond memories of his various traveling experiences, which included visits to several state landmarks and Edisto Beach. He also enjoyed playing with his cousins in the countryside.
Volunteering at Colleton County Memorial Library brought immense fulfillment to him. He was also a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church No. 1 in Walterboro where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School. In recent years, Steven took great honor in being a part of "Special Gatherings", a Christian-based nondenominational ministry, dedicated to sharing the good news within a special needs community. As a part of this experience, he attended Sunday services regularly, participated in the choir, and had many happy memories of camp outings, and various other activities.
Surviving are: a sister, Debra Jean Hudson of Ruffin; a loving extended host of family members to include, Frances Player Hallman, Noriko Player, and Betty Maxey; several beloved and fondly thought of cousins; and a devoted caretaker, Jean Boatwright. He was preceded in death by his step-father, Robert “Bob” Hudson”; a brother, Timmy Dean Maxey; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family extends many thanks to family and friends for their love over the years; Jean Boatwright for her faithful devotion as his care provider; Agape Care Staff for their professional and wonderful care-you will never be forgotten; Pastor Ken McCaskill and church family for their love and support in difficult times; and Special Gatherings for their love and spiritual mentorship to Stevie.
