Mr. Spencer Ellis Herndon, Jr., 72, of Ruffin, entered into eternal rest Wednesday afternoon, December 31, 2014, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.
Born August 5, 1942, in Charleston, he was a lifelong resident of Colleton County and was the son of the late Spencer Ellis Herndon, Sr., and the late Gladys Elizabeth Hudson Herndon. Ellis was a devoted farmer and also owned and operated a trucking business for many years. He was a member of Tabor United Methodist Church. He was well loved and known for his sense of humor.
Surviving are: his wife of forty-six years, Mrs. Hannah Byrd Herndon; four children, Benjie Herndon and his wife Yvonne of Ruffin, Wanda Herndon Mahon and her husband Kris of Daniel Island, Gary Herndon and his wife Whitney of Ruffin, and Ellen Herndon Melton and her husband Philip of Summerville. There are two grandchildren, Seth Melton and Henry Herndon; a step-grandson, Brantley Walling; and his devoted caregiver, Mrs. Janet Strickland.
Funeral services will be held privately.
