Mrs. Sara Achaia Godley Hunter, 91, of Hampton, entered her eternal home Sunday morning, December 24, 2023, at Hampton Regional Medical Center, after an extended illness. She was the widow of James Marion “Jim” Hunter.
Born May 19, 1932, in Colleton County, she was the daughter of the late Donald Sherman Godley and Sarah Elizabeth Polk Godley. She began working at Plywood Plastics in 1950, which later became known as Westinghouse Micarta Division and then became Nevamar. She retired in 1990 as the Executive Assistant to the Plant Manager. Sara loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and served him in several capacities including teaching adult Sunday School, small group Bible studies, and worked with various children ministries. She was a member of Varnville First Baptist Church.
Surviving are: her sisters-in-law, Betty M. Hunter of Orangeburg, Patricia H. Zeigler of Fairfax, and Francine H. Smiley of Varnville; 6 nieces; 3 nephews; 20 great nieces and nephews; and 10 great-great nieces and nephews. She was dearly loved by all her family and will be greatly missed by all. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her 3 infant daughters; sister, Jeanette Harvey (Jimmy); and one nephew, Don Harvey.
The family would like to thank everyone that cared for her at the hospital, especially the nursing staff for their love and compassion.

Funeral services will be held 2 o’clock, Thursday afternoon, December 28, 2023, at Varnville First Baptist Church, 165 Palmetto Avenue West, Varnville. The Reverend Dr. Thomas Kelly and Doctor Francis Mills officiating. Interment will follow in Hampton Cemetery, Holly Street, Hampton.
The family will receive friends during a time of visitation one hour prior to the service beginning at 1 pm in the church sanctuary.
