Ruth Mitchell Vansant

Mrs. Ruth Mitchell Vansant, age 97, entered into eternal rest early Wednesday morning, December 30, 2015, at her daughter’s home in Islandton while under the care of Agape Hospice.  She was the loving wife of fifty-eight years to the late Mr. Franklin G. Vansant.

A celebration of her life will be held at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon, January 10, 2016, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.  The Reverend Fred Davis, officiating.

The family will receive friends following the funeral ceremony that afternoon at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to: Colleton County Relay for Life, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, South Carolina 29406.

A daughter of the late Harland Hough Mitchell and the late Wilma Chew Mitchell, she was born July 6, 1918 and was a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Over the years of her life, she and Frank lived several places, starting in Pitman, New Jersey where they built their first home, and then Homosassa, Florida, finally retiring to Santee, South Carolina.  She  was a graduate of Glassboro State College (known today as Rowan University) where she received her Bachelor’s degree and was a retired educator with thirty years of service, having taught in Barnesboro, New Jersey, Glassboro, New Jersey, and Pitman, New Jersey.    She was a member of Elloree United Methodist Church.  She was cherished by the many who knew and loved her dearly, recalling her love of camping, reading and traveling the East Coast of the United States.  Her love of music and beautiful voice that was heard at many functions will always be remembered.

Ruth resided that last four years of her life with her daughter, Sally Vansant Williams and her family in Islandton, and was lovingly cared for by her son-in-law Larry.  She is also survived by three grandchildren, Michel P. Vansant and his wife Becky, Michael A. Williams, and Elizabeth R. Williams; and two great grandchildren, Carter Vansant and Garrett Vansant.  She was preceded in death by a son, Franklin Steven Vansant.
