December 11, 1925 — May 25, 2014

Biography

Mrs. Ruth Metts Thompson, 88, of Rhode Drive in Cottageville, entered into rest Sunday evening, May 25, 2014, following an extended illness at the Oakwood Health Care Center on Witsell Street in Walterboro.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 o'clock Friday morning, May 30, 2014, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend Jackie Walters and The Reverend Bobby Ethridge officiating. Interment will follow in Ackerman Cemetery at Red Oak in Cottageville.

Born December 11, 1925, a native of Cottageville, she was one of eight children born to the late John T. Metts and the late Nellie Hoff Metts. She worked as a sales associate for many years at the former Sky City in Walterboro. Ruth lived a simple life, and could often be found spending time in her yard gardening and tending to her flowers. After failing health, a favorite pastime became bird watching from her kitchen window. While never rich according to the world's standards, she possessed a generous spirit and was willing to share what little she had. Those that knew and loved her never had to question where they stood with her as she was never afraid to speak her mind.

Surviving are: a sister, Myrtle Missel and also many nieces and nephews to include Rita Padgett and the late Neil Metts that she helped raise, ones she loved as children, Roger and Diane Smoak and family, and Mark and Sherry Carter and family; and a special friend, Harry Smith.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of Oakwood and United Hospice for the care extended to Mrs. Thompson these past few years.

Family and friends are invited to call from 6 o'clock until 8 o'clock this Thursday evening at THE BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOMES, WALTERBORO CHAPEL, 1193 Bells Highway, Walterboro, 843.538.5408. Visit the registry online at: www.briceherndonfuneralhome.com.
