Ruth Finlay

COTTAGEVILLE Mrs. Ruth Ann Spencer Finlay, 84, of 164 Finlayville Court, Cottageville, entered into her state of eternal rest Sunday, December 26, 2010, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.



Funeral services will be conducted 3 oclock Sunday afternoon, January 2, 2010, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The family will receive friends following the funeral ceremony in the Craven Parlor of the Funeral Home until 5 oclock that afternoon.



Mrs. Finlay was born May 21, 1926, in Burlington, Colorado, and was a daughter of the late Frank I. Spencer and the late Anna Emelia Johnson Spencer. She was a member of the Springhill Baptist Church in Cottageville, was also a member of the Walterboro Chapter No. 147 - Order of the Eastern Star, and the International Association of Laryngectome. She loved to write, and beginning back in 1963, she kept a daily diary of the events of her life, the experiences she had, and the current situations of the World at the time she wrote them. She and her family sent the diaries to Duke University, which are housed in their main campus library.



Surviving are: her husband of sixty-eight years, Mr. John Arnold Finlay; four sons, John I. Finlay of Cottageville, Bob J. Finlay of Jonesboro, Georgia, James A. Finlay of Cottageville, and Herbert Finlay of Cottageville; three sisters, Hilma Andrews of Lewiston, Idaho, Edna Thurmond of Seattle, Washington, and Mildred Miller of Portland, Oregon; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.
