Rufus Chapman

Mr. Rufus Bernard Chapman, Sr., 93, of Beaufort, formerly of Green Pond, entered into eternal rest Sunday, September 25, 2011 at the Helena House in Port Royal. He was first married to the late Genevieve Eulalie Lighthart and secondly to the late Celeste Waters Chapman.
The Funeral Mass will be held 1 o'clock, Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Saint Anthony Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Green Pond Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Chapman was born April 25, 1918 in Charleston and was a son of the late Samuel Sylvester Chapman and Kathleen Millin Howard Chapman. He was a graduate of Cathedral Grammar School and Bishop England High School, Class of 1935. He was the Treasurer of the City of Charleston Public Works Department, having retired in 1976. Mr. Chapman was a member of Saint Anthony Catholic Church and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 704 in Charleston. He was a present member of the Charleston German Friendly Society and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, Richard H. Anderson Camp #47, Beaufort, SC.
Surviving are: his children, Rose Mary Chapman Willson of Charleston, Carolyn Ann Chapman Yang of Lexington, Kentucky, Marilyn Jean Chapman Burk of Holly Hill, Rufus Bernard Chapman, Jr. of Columbia, Michael Joseph Chapman of Florence, William Thomas Chapman of Beaufort and John Michael Chapman of Charleston; 11 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Clarence Chapman; brothers, Joseph Ignatius Chapman and John Patrick Chapman; and sisters, Katherine Bonita Benke, Genevieve Elizabeth Bullwinkle and Margaret Clementine Bruner.
