Roland P. Marchant

July 13, 1943 — November 3, 2013

Mr. Roland P. Marchant, 70, of Red Bank Road, Canadys, entered into rest Sunday evening, November 3, 2013, at the Trident Medical Center in North Charleston following a brief illness which he fought with an inspiring faith.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 o’clock Thursday morning, November 7, 2013, from Canaan Baptist Church, 12760 Augusta Highway, Walterboro. The Reverend David Blankenship, The Reverend James Preveaux, and The Reverend Dr. Zane Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery, Augusta Highway, Walterboro.

Born July 13, 1943, he was a son of the late F.L. Marchant and the late Pearline Infinger Marchant. Mr. Marchant was a native of North Charleston and was a lifelong resident and well-loved icon of the Canadys community. Roland was no stranger to hard work and was always admired for his strong work ethic. For twenty-eight years, he was employed by the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he retired as a supervisor over their electronics department. He was currently employed by Alutiiq of Alaska, a high tech security systems company.

Roland was a dedicated member of Canaan Baptist Church, where he was active in most any area of the church’s work. At his church, he was currently serving on the Deacon Board, was a Sunday School teacher and Men’s Ministry Director and was a member of the Choir. For more than twenty years, he served the Colleton Baptist Association as their Associational Men’s Ministry Director, which led Roland and his longtime friend, The Reverend Ned Frownfelter, to establish and together co-found the Colleton Baptist Association’s Men’s Ministry Christmas Project which over the years has grown to help nearly two hundred children every year experience a loving and joyous holiday season.

He was a member of the Gideons International and also served with South Carolina Baptist Disaster Relief having been present on the frontlines of the disasters of Hurricanes Hugo, Fran and Andrew. Roland will be fondly remembered for his loving and sweet spirit, his joy of fishing in earlier years and more recently his acquired love for a good game of Golf, and for the way he silently gave his love and help to anyone he could always wishing to remain anonymous and in the background.

Surviving are: his loving wife of fifty years, Mrs. Carolyn Ricketson Marchant; four daughters, Sherry Marchant Zeigler of Fairbanks, Alaska, Kristy Marchant Dryden and her husband Wayne of Walterboro, Stacy Rolynn Marchant of North Charleston, and Malia Carol Marchant of Walterboro; two brothers, Larry Marchant and his wife Annette of Holly Hill and Donald Marchant and his wife Peggy of Saint George; and two sisters, Dicksie Knight and her husband Wallace of Harleyville and Nettie Atkins and her husband Victor of Grover.
