Mr. Robert Joseph McPherson, 90, originally of Kershaw and later of Hartsville, died Monday, June 23, 2008 at Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. He was the widower of his beloved Dorothy Simpson McPherson originally of Pendleton, S.C.



Mr. McPherson was born April 23, 1918 in Kershaw and was a son of the late Herbert Leach McPherson and Allyne Langston McPherson. He was a 1942 graduate of Wofford College with a B.S. in Chemistry where he played football and served as Art Director. Mr. McPherson served his country in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946 as an officer in the Chemical Warfare Division. . He was the Chemical Lab Director for Kershaw Oil during most of his career and was later affiliated with Hartsville Oil. He was a member of the American Oil Chemists Society and received many Outstanding Achievement Awards. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Kershaw and St. Lukes United Methodist Church in Hartsville.



Mr. McPherson was a man who deeply loved his family, but was also someone who often saw the funny side of life. He will always be remembered for his humorous stories and practical jokes. Mr. McPherson was an avid cartoonist who delighted in depicting his family and friends in comedic vignettes. He was equally passionate about golfing, gardening and fishing. His magnanimous personality and love of life reflected the Light of his Creator, to whom he gave all the credit and sincere gratitude for a life well-lived.



Surviving are: his children, Valerie McPherson Privette of Columbia and Robert Gregg McPherson of Irmo; and 3 grandchildren, Robert Blakely Privette, Alison Langston Privette and Miles Alexander Privette.



The family will have a private service at a later date.
