Robert "Bob" Mcghie, Jr.

Cottageville, South Carolina

Mr. Robert Emmit McGhie, Jr., known by many as “Bob”, 87, of Cottageville, entered into rest Thursday afternoon, April 18, 2024, at his residence while under hospice care and surrounded by his loving family.

Born December 11, 1936, in Trenton, New Jersey, he was a son of the late Robert Emmit McGhie, Sr. and the late Ruth Jones McGhie.   He graduated from Frenchtown High School in Frenchtown, New Jersey and quickly after enlisted in the United States Marine Corps with a few of his high school buddies.  After serving in the Marine Corps, he began in Civil Service and worked at Parris Island. He also taught auto mechanics at the machine shop at the Walterboro Vocational School until his retirement.   He later returned to work with Hawthorn Services and worked for them faithfully until his final retirement at the age of 85.  He was a lifelong member of Unity Masonic Lodge No. 55 – Ancient Free Masons in Walterboro and was also a Shriner.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a familiar face at the local Huddle House in Walterboro, where he was always seen enjoying a cup of coffee.

Surviving are: his wife, Mrs. Mary Groves McGhie; a sister, Eileen Browne of New Jersey; three children, Deborah Frakes (Stephen), Robin Loadholt (Tony McLane), and Bobby McGhie (Rhonda); two step-children, Dallas Ackerman (Nicole) and David Ackerman (Jacque); and his grandchildren, April Cooke (Wesley) Nicholas Thomas, Tyler McGhie, Ryan McGhie (Rachel), Mary Beth Latham (Jason), Joey Loadholt, Brooke Mize (Cole), Kayla Cyr (Cody), Cassidy Ackerman, Hannah Biering and Caleb Rabon.   There are also fifteen great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a son, John M. McGhie; and a sister, Helen Case.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the following: Shriners Hospital for Children; or to, St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, April 22, 2024, from the graveside at Jones Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Churchyard, 320 Jones Swamp Road, Walterboro.   The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.
