Mr. Robert Jacob Hughes, 79, of Pinewood Street in the Forest Hills Subdivision of Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Monday morning, May 5, 2014, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, May 8, 2014, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.
The family will receive friends following the funeral ceremony at the funeral home.
Born July 19, 1934, a native of Conway, South Carolina, he made the Lowcountry of South Carolina his home since 1979. He was a son of the late Joseph W. Hughes and the late Dawn Reddick Hughes and served his country faithfully in the United States Navy. Mr. Hughes was an avid outdoorsman, who receive his associate's degree in Forestry from the University of Florida, and from 1960 until 1999 was employed by Mead Westvaco in Walterboro as a Forrester until the time of his retirement. He was a member of Frazer Lake Hunting Club and will be fondly remembered for his love of air planes and having flown model air planes as well as the fishing boat he had built. He was of the Southern Baptist faith.
Surviving are: his wife of fifty-one years, Mrs. Helen Williams Hughes; a son, Tony Watson Hughes and his wife Susan of Irmo; a daughter, Elizabeth Hughes Craven of Walterboro; a brother, Edward Hughes of Walterboro; and a sister, Martha Genevieve Hull of Spartanburg. There are two grandchildren, Carolina Analese Hughes and Clement Jacob Craven. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Clement Jerry Craven; a brother, Joe W. Hughes; and a sister, Margaret Ann Williams.
