Robert "Hezzie" Bishop

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Robert Wayne “Hezzie” Bishop, our courageous and sweet brother, uncle, cousin and friend on Sunday, May 12, 2019.

Hezzie was born in Beaufort, South Carolina on June 5, 1951 to Oscar Rudolph Bishop, Sr. and Ruth Steinmeyer Bishop. He grew up on Lady’s Island and Yard Farm, the St. Helena Island truck farm of O.H. Bishop and Sons, where he learned the lessons only life on a farm can teach.  He attended Beaufort schools, and graduated from Beaufort Academy in 1970.  He made a life-ling career of Golf Course Management, keeping the greens beautifully groomed and attractive for others to enjoy.

The youngest of six children, he was blessed to spend his entire life in Beaufort and the Sea Islands.  He cherished everything about being a native of the South Carolina Lowcountry, including hunting, fishing, and boating, and never met a dog or a cat he didn’t like.  In short, everything he ever treasured was at the end of a dirt road.

We imagine there is a great reunion happening today with those who have gone before him: his parents, Rudolph and Ruth Bishop; three brothers, Steve, Jim and Fred; his grandparents; and numerous other family members who are certainly celebrating his arrival.

He is survived by his brother, O.R. “Sonny” Bishop, Jr. (Mary); his sister, Patty Bishop Hudson (Roy); and a large collection of nieces, nephews, and cousins – including Bette Ruth Bishop Cappelmann, his cousin and life-ling friend who has stayed by his side through thick and thin.  While we will miss his gentle smile, his sense of humor, and his loyal way of putting family and friends first, we are happy knowing that he is in the loving arms of our Lord, and is surrounded by his family, as we all will be one day.

A memorial service will be held 3 o’clock, Saturday afternoon, June 8, 2019, at 60 Yard Farm Road, St. Helena Island, SC.
