Richard Clayton Stephenson

June 11, 1940 — February 8, 2022

Walterboro, South Carolina

Mr. Richard Clayton Stephenson, 81, of Walterboro, entered into rest Tuesday morning, February 8, 2022, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.  He was the loving husband of sixty years to the Mrs. Lillie Murr Stephenson who preceded him in death in November of 2021.

Born June 11, 1940, in Greenville County, South Carolina, he was a son of the late William Walton Stephenson and the late Frances Hobbs Stephenson.  He made Walterboro his home in 1966 at the building of J.P. Stevens, having been a part of the opening of this textile plant where he worked faithfully until his retirement in 2003.  He was a devoted member of Edgewood Baptist Church in Walterboro where he served as a Deacon and participated in Sunday School.  He was a Master Mason and a member of Ebenezer Lodge in Slater, South Carolina.   He loved to play golf and was an avid Carolina Gamecocks fan.

Surviving are:  a son, Richard C. Stephenson, Jr. and is wife Terrie of New Ellenton; a daughter, Stella Ann Stephenson Caldwell of Walterboro; four grandchildren, Charles Clayton Fennessy, Ashlynn Leigh Stephenson (Bradley), Robert Bailey Fennessy (Kayla), and Richard Cameron Stephenson; and his fur-baby, London. He was preceded in death by a son, William Robert Stephenson; two brothers, Buddy Stephenson and Johnny Stephenson; and a sister, Nancy Bowles.

The family has suggested that memorials be directed in his memory to the following:  Edgewood Baptist Church, 138 Wildwood Drive, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488; or to, Fisher House Foundation, 12300 Twinbrook Pkwy, Suite 410,  Rockville, Maryland 20852.
