Rae Polk

Mrs. Rae Gibson Polk, 78, of 1932 Ashton Road, Islandton, entered into rest Thursday morning, April 25, 2013, at her residence surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Amedisys Hospice.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 Saturday afternoon, April 27, 2013, from Rice Patch Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, 15246 Sniders Highway, Islandton. The Reverend Dr. Larry Smith, The Reverend Tom Polk, and The Reverend Michael Polk officiating and with Eastern Star rites. Interment will follow in the churchyard.

Born January 27, 1935, a native of Colleton County, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd J. Gibson and the late Edna Jones Gibson. She retired from the molding department of Westinghouse in Hampton after thirty years of service and was a faithful member Rice Patch Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Islandton. She was a longtime member of Community Chapter No. 206, Order of the Eastern Star in Islandton where she was currently serving as the Chapter’s star point of Ruth. Rae dearly loved her family and community, and will always be recalled in her family’s memories as a caring and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was a wonderful southern cook and her delicious southern meals will be greatly missed. Rae’s favorite pastimes included gardening and traveling.

Surviving are: her husband of fifty-seven years, Mr. Billy Derwood Polk; two daughters, Debra Polk Dicks and her husband Thomas of Barnwell and Cynthia Diane P. Hutto of Islandton; two brothers, L. J. Gibson, Jr. and Bobby Gibson both of Hampton; and two sisters, Violet Crosby of Walterboro and Gloria Godley of Islandton. There are five grandchildren, Jennifer Rae Stock and her husband Jason of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Christopher Michael Hutto and his wife Jennifer of Islandton, Gary Thomas Dicks and his wife Heather of Florence, Sarah Leigh Dicks of Barnwell, and Stacy Diane Hutto of Summerville; as well as two great grandchildren, Addison Rae Stock and Graham Thomas Dicks that also survive. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Gibson and Roy N. Gibson; and a sister, Gladys Crosby Lamb.

Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to: Rice Patch Christian Church for use with the Cemetery Fund, care of Mr. Laverne Polk, 1865 Ashton Road, Islandton, South Carolina 29929.
