Percy Hiers

Captain Percy Hiers, 80, of 601 See See Road near Walterboro, entered into his eternal rest Wednesday evening, June 8, 2011, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.

Funeral Services will be conducted 2:30 Sunday afternoon, June 12, 2011, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro, with The Reverend Jack Padgett officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Great Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Great Swamp Road, Walterboro.

Mr. Hiers was born November 1, 1930, in Colleton County and was a son of the late Earl Hiers and the late Zada Trowell Hiers. He served his country faithfully in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, and among his assignments was the USS Yorktown. He dedicated much of his life to fire service. He was employed for a short time as a fireman with the Beaufort Marine Corp Air Station before going to the Beaufort Naval Hospital where he worked until his retirement where he had achieved the rank of Captain. After retirement, he was employed by Wildwood Nursery in Walterboro.

He was a member of Great Swamp Baptist Church in Walterboro where he formerly served on the Deacon Board and over the years he had been active in many aspects of the church's work. Percy possessed an avid love for gardening. His favorite of flowers was the Camellia and he prided himself the most in having planted over 150 camellia plants, always giving them his utmost attention, having attended many shows and classes on the cultivation and care of the flower. He also spent much time assisting his brothers with farming their land and he also had a great love of fishing the local creeks and ponds of Colleton County. He was a member of the American Disabled Veterans.

Surviving are: his wife of fifty-two years, Mrs. Valerie Gibson Hiers; two sons, Glen Dwight Hiers and his wife Rose and Dennis Dean Hiers and his wife Paula both of Walterboro; and a brother, Clemnson C. Hiers of Walterboro. There are six grandchildren, Stacy Ellis and her husband Jesse, Megan Hiers, Jennifer Hiers, Kristina Hiers, Jeremy Hiers, and Joshua Hiers; as well as a great granddaughter, Lily Ellis that also survive. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathan Hiers. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eddie Hiers, and a sister, Marie Hiers Herndon.
