WALTERBORO – Mrs. Patricia Harmon Rhode, 87, of Walterboro, entered into rest Wednesday evening, May 13, 2026, at her residence while under the care of Agape Hospice. She was the loving wife of sixty-six years to the late Mr. James Charles Rhode, Sr.
Born January 15, 1939, in Summerville, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Tupper Harmon and the late Lavinia Burbage Harmon. Pat worked a faithful career of over thirty years with the Colleton County School District, where she made a lasting impact on countless students and retired as Head Secretary of Walterboro High School. While at Walterboro High, she remained dedicated to excellence and improving the academic experience that the students she dearly loved had. She was heavily involved with the Booster Club and was instrumental in the founding, as well as, inductee of the Walterboro High School Hall of Fame.
A longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Walterboro, she was faithful in many aspects of the church’s work. Many will remember seeing Pat all over Walterboro as she was an avid runner and member of the Walterboro Running Club, holding over eleven state records. She was a talented artist and will always be remembered as a great Southern cook and for her love of gardening. As a writer, she authored an unpublished children’s book and her own personal memoir. She commitment to Christ and his work led her to participate in the local jail ministry and on a mission trip to Kenya, Africa.
Surviving are: a son, Steve Clyde Rhode of Walterboro; a son-in-law, David Stubbs of Easley; two sisters, Brenda Harmon Merrill and Diane Harmon Nettles, both of Summerville; four grandchildren, Patricia “Bethany” Comstock (Adam), David Derrick Stubbs, Jr. (Erika), Gabriel Mitchell Rhode (Alexis), and Adrianna Marie Rhode; and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two of her children, Rhonda Rhode Stubbs and James Charles “Jimmy” Rhode, Jr.
Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has requested memorials in her memory to the following: First Baptist Church of Walterboro, 124 South Memorial Avenue, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488; or to, Colleton County High School c/o Cougar Athletic Booster Club, 150 Cougar Nation Drive, Walterboro, SC 29488.
The relatives and friends of Mrs. Patricia Harmon Rhode are invited to attend her funeral services which will be conducted at 11 o’clock Monday morning, May 18, 2026, from The First Baptist Church of Walterboro, 124 South Memorial Avenue, Walterboro. The Reverend Braxton Edwards and The Reverend James W. Williams, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Kinsey Cemetery in Round O.
