Murphy "Mutt" Bennett

Mr. Murphy Tillman Bennett, Jr. affectionately known to everyone as “Mutt”, 83, of Early Branch, entered into eternal rest Friday, February 6, 2026, at Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. He was the husband of the late Juanita Ginn Bennett to whom he was married 48 years.

Born December 20, 1942, in Hampton County, he was a son of the late Murphy Tillman Bennett, Sr. and Ethel Grace Bell Bennett. He served his country in the United States Army as a Medical Specialist. Mutt had worked at the Icehouse in Varnville and retired as a warehouse associate from LeCreuset. He was a devoted member of Deep Branch Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Director. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 108 in Hampton. He volunteered whenever he could at Varnville Elementary and enjoyed visiting with everyone at Country Cutters. Mutt never met a stranger and loved everyone. He loved his family and spending time with them and especially loved his dog, Penny.

Surviving are: one that he loved as a son and raised as his own, Brandon Jarrell; sisters, Brenda Latham and her husband Tim of Hampton and Karen Mew of Varnville; brother, Coleman Bell and his wife Terri of Bluffton; and many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Bennett.

Funeral services will be held 2 o’clock, Tuesday afternoon, February 10, 2026, at The Brice Herndon Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel. Interment will follow in Thames Cemetery, Thames Cemetery Road, Varnville.
